Her father, Patrick, served as a WWII veteran and worked as a miner, while her mother, Bridget, was a shorthand typist. Occasionally, her father performed as a singer at a local venue called the Bishop’s Blaize. Throughout her childhood, Boyle faced bullying and was raised under the belief that, due to a challenging birth, she had suffered from oxygen deprivation, leading to a learning disability. However, she later discovered she had been misdiagnosed and actually possesses Asperger syndrome along with an “above average” IQ. Struggling academically, she earned few qualifications but still pursued singing lessons from vocal coach Fred O’Neil and attended Edinburgh Acting School.

Career

In 1998, Boyle invested her own savings to produce a demo, which she circulated among record companies, local and national TV, and radio talent competitions. The demo featured her singing “Cry Me a River,” “Killing Me Softly,” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” Following her audition for “Britain’s Got Talent,” those songs were uploaded to the internet. Additionally, her early work, including a rendition of “Cry Me a River” featured on the CD “Music for a Millennium Celebration, Sounds of West Lothian,” was released in 1999.
